JONATHAN KNIGHT
Bespoke website for a contemporary sculptor
THE BRIEF
Jonathan Knight is a British sculptor whose bronze animals and birds explore the space between representation and abstraction, distilling their subjects into expressions of form, mass and stillness.
The brief was to design and develop a bespoke sculptor’s website with a new digital identity reflecting the evolution of his practice. Recent sculptures would take prominence within a comprehensive archive of earlier work, alongside dedicated sections exploring his process, commissions and exhibitions.
THE DESIGN CONCEPT
The design centres on the three-dimensional nature of the work. Multiple viewpoints and close attention to surface invite visitors to consider the sculptures through their volume, texture and changing silhouette.
A minimal sans serif typeface and grids inspired by Swiss graphic design establish a precise, contemporary framework. The bespoke homepage animation pairs selected sculptures with enlarged details of their bronze surfaces, bringing the complete form and the intimacy of its material into one composition.
KEY FEATURES
An opening reveal introduces the homepage animation, followed by a selection of recent sculptures presented from several angles. These changing perspectives give a fuller sense of each piece and its presence in space.
The artwork archive offers two ways to explore: a vertically scrolling list and a filtered grid. Selecting an image opens smoothly into a full-screen slideshow, allowing visitors to look more closely at the sculpture.
The Process page follows the key stages of making a sculpture through a bespoke sequence of scroll-based animation. On the Commissions page, a separate animated sequence presents examples of commissioned work.
ADDITIONAL TOOLS
A structured content management system enables to manage artworks and exhibitions. Individual exhibition pages can be added automatically with installation views and selected sculptures, allowing the website to develop alongside Jonathan’s practice.
An enquiry form accompanies each work, automatically including its title to make the conversation specific to the piece.
