LAURENT NICOLAS
Bespoke website for a visual artist
THE BRIEF
Laurent Nicolas is a visual artist whose practice moves between ceramics, sculpture, drawing and photography, exploring the relationships between material, memory and inherited gestures.
The brief was to design and develop a bespoke bilingual artist website with the considered structure of an art book and a contemporary digital presence. Work, research, exhibitions and publications would come together through an editorial approach, giving images and writing equal importance in the presentation of his practice.
THE DESIGN CONCEPT
A new logo and logotype were developed around a modern, minimal typeface. A monochrome palette, punctuated by ochre as a signature accent, establishes a restrained visual identity.
Editorial columns and justified text give the pages the measured structure of a book, allowing written reflections to sit closely alongside the work.
On the homepage, a full-screen animation of sliding close-up images introduces the different categories of Laurent’s practice, with interactive links inviting visitors to explore each section.
KEY FEATURES
Each category of work brings together images and descriptive texts, offering space to explore both the finished pieces and the ideas behind them. A structured content management system keeps this extensive material organised.
Dedicated exhibition and publication sections extend the presentation of Laurent’s practice, with an accessible editing process that allows him to document new projects as they develop.
ADDITIONAL TOOLS
A more experimental research section brings sound, texts and visuals into an interactive experience that unfolds on scroll. Its minimal presentation offers another way to encounter the materials, processes and transformations that inform Laurent’s work.
